North Terrace is to become even worse for cycling

The plans for the tram extension to East Terrace have been made public and its bad news for cycling.

With trams having their own dedicated tracks and with passenger loading and unloading from the sides rather than the centre (as in King William Street) there is not much space left for other traffic.

Cyclists used to have a wide kerbside lane that they could share with cars.  Now there will be only two narrow traffic lanes, so only the brave, fast cyclists will be able to use the road.  When we approached DPTI’s public relations about it, we were told that we would just have to use the footpath.

It’s probably too late the change the plans, but we are calling for a 30km/h speed limit and designating the northern most footpath (next to the buildings) to be designated for cyclists.  Read more.
